A promising university lacrosse player has been charged with the murder of a female player.

George Huguely, a 22-year-old student from the University of Virginia in the US, is alleged to have killed Yeardley Love.

Police were called by Love's roommate about 2.15am yesterday amid fears the fourth-year student had suffered alcohol poisoning.

But officers found Love, also 22, dead with noticeable injuries on her body.

Huguely, who had been recently involved in a romantic relationship with the victim, was quickly taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder.

"It was quickly apparent to them that this young lady was the victim of something far worse [than drinking]," the Associated Press quoted Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo as saying.

The cause of death is yet to be released but it is not believed any weapons were involved.

University athletics director Craig Littlepage said Love was "a person who was described as an angel by teammates and friends", while school president John Casteen said she "deserved the bright future she earned".

"She deserves to be remembered for her human goodness [and] her capacity for future greatness," Mr Casteen said.

The accused and victim had been regular players for their highly-ranked university teams and both were due to graduate next month.

Huguely is being held in custody.
